October 9-11, 2017
Our June webinar presented a tantalizing look at one of the world's first urban pilot projects converting green waste into heat for district heating and biochar for urban and residential landscaping use. Several members inquired about visiting the project to learn more with an eye towards replicating this project elsewhere. IBI has worked with Mattias Gustafsson, the Project Manager and Bjorn Embren, Stockholm's Tree Officer to put together a 2½ day program that will provide attendees with much more depth on the project. Additional presentations by regional experts in biochar and biochar production technologies are being added to take full advantage of the many advances in biochar production and use in Scandinavia and Northern Europe.
A draft of the topics to be covered includes:
Building support for urban biochar production Mattias Gustafsson
Benefits & Uses of Biochar in Urban Landscapes Bjorn Embren
District Heating Kåre Gustafsson, Fortum Värme
Carbon Accounting/Life Cycle Assessments Cecilia Sundberg, KTH
Replication of the Stockholm Biochar Project
Finnish Carbonization Technology Sampo Tukiainen, CarboFex Oy, Finland
Biochar Markets Kathleen Draper, IBI Board, Ithaka Institute
Biochar as a tool to reduce the agricultural GHG burden Claudia Kamman, Geisenheim University
Biochar in Biowaste Management Aino Kainulainen, Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority
Carbon + - Norwegian project Maria Kollberg Thomassen
(Additional topics for Wednesday still being added.)
The cost includes 2½ days of workshops, tours and lunches. Hotels and airefare are not included.
