This literature review was conducted by lead researcher Manuel Garcia-Perez for the Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources, Washington State University, United States. The review includes descriptions and illustrations of dozens of different pyrolysis technologies from different periods of history including those in use today. This publication will be of great interest to those who are looking to revive and improve on historical and current pyrolysis technologies.
Funding for the study is provided by the Washington State Department of Ecology with the intention to address the growing demand for information on the design of advanced pyrolysis units. This is the first of a series of reports exploring the use of biomass thermochemical conversion technologies to sequester carbon and to produce fuels and chemicals.
