Terra Preta Featured at new Smithsonian Exhibit "Dig It! The Secrets of Soils"
The new exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington DC features a monolith of typical Terra Preta soil complete with layers and pottery shards. IBI Chairman of the Board, Johannes Lehmann, worked with the Smithsonian Museum to ensure that this important example of soil was included in the exhibit. On March 10, 2008, The Ecological Society of America will host a one-day conference on the Ecological Dimensions of Biofuels. 500 attendees will have the opportunity to hear invited presentations by leading scientists on: - sustainable development and use of biofuels; - social, bio-geographic, land use, and biodiversity considerations; - ecological dimensions of alternatives for crop selection and production, harvest and transport of product to refinery, and refining of liquid fuels and other co-products.

January 27, 2008: Biochar workshop for small farmers in Central America
Biochar was featured at the annual board and staff meeting of NGO Sustainable Harvest International in Honduras on January 27, 2008. IBI Member Julie Major from Cornell University lead a workshop where field extension agents working across Central America, as well as local small farmers will learn about the benefits of soil management with biochar. Some demonstration plots were also set up in the field. For more information, click here.

Iowa State University is hosting the 2007 Biobased Industry Outlook Conference, November 5-6, 2007. The Conference, "Growing the Bioeconomy: Science and Policy for Next Generation Biorefining" will have a Tuesday, November 6 session on Agri-char and Nutrient Recycling.
