The Abstract Submission Deadline for the IBI Conference Extended

Abstracts for Poster Sessions accepted until July 15, 2008

(We are no longer accepting abstracts for oral presentations)

The response we have received to the call for abstracts has far exceeded our expectations, in terms of the number of offers of contributions, and both the seniority and authority of the participants.  The structure of the conference is designed to maximise interaction between participants.  We will have just one oral session at any one time, and we will allow substantial time for posters and for discussion sessions.

Because of the response so far, the dominant format for presentation will be as posters.  All posters, exhibits and refreshments will be in the same location and will be available for the duration of the meeting.  We will use a range of networking methods to ensure that your poster is promoted as effectively as possible, and we are confident that the poster sessions will be an excellent vehicle for discussion.

In the Panel Sessions, we plan to produce brief reports of the content and outcome of the discussion that takes place.  These reports will record the names of contributors.  Thus there is a second opportunity for participants to make oral contributions to the conference.   This will be especially valuable as all participants will have had the opportunity to develop their thinking in the days leading up to the Panel Sessions.

Abstracts for additional poster contributions will continue to be accepted through until midnight on 15th July 2008.  Please fill out the abstract submission form and send to Helen Vickers at: helen.vickers@whymangroup.com

Detailed Descriptions of the Technical Sessions

Technical Session 1: Biochar production
In this session, papers are invited to address issues concerning technological aspects of the production of biochar, at all scales (laboratory, pilot plant, full scale plant, developing country systems, shifting cultivation) and including transportation and application. The performance of different feedstocks, production conditions and their effects on biochar yields, and where appropriate, energy yields, will be considered, together with papers on the testing of pyrolysis products and gaseous emissions during production including health issues.

Technical Session 2: Biochar characterization
This session will focus on the detailed characterization of biochars to determine their structure and composition with respect to its application as a soil amendment.  Papers are invited that focus on the physical, chemical and biological properties of biochar produced under various pyrolysis/carbonization schemes, as well as papers concerned with characterization of the fundamental structure and composition of biochar.

Technical Session 3: Biochar amendments to soils
This session focuses on the scientific basis that underpins the use of biochar as a soil amendment.  It welcomes papers that present the results of studies concerning the agronomic benefits of biochar application to soils, plants and microorganisms, work on scientific aspects of the environmental impact of biochar and its stability, and research on changes of biochar in soil including movement by leaching and erosion.

Technical Session 4: Carbon trading, commercialisation, and policy issues concerning biochar
Contributions are invited concerning the big picture issues that surround biochar.   Papers will cover the issues relating to the commercialisation of the technology and sale of biochar, carbon accounting in systems that generate biochar, subsidies, the economics and energy budgets of pyrolysis systems that are integrated with other on-farm, civic or waste management activities, as well as certification and approval by environmental protection agencies.  Papers are invited that address the global contribution that biochar use might have on carbon emissions and atmospheric composition, and how this feeds into policy issues at local, regional, national and international levels.
