Ghent University in Belgium focuses biochar research on the effects of biochar on soil biological properties and nutrient dynamics (ir. Nele Ameloot). Biochar, produced during the pyrolysis of biomass, is considered to be highly recalcitrant against decomposition, and therefore contibutes to the sequestration of carbon. Highlighted research by the staff of five includes the production of biochar, use of biochar for soil quality improvement, use of biochar for soil C sequestration, and characterization of biochar.
