IBI has 501(c)3 status from the US IRS (non-profit).

In June 2008, members of the IBI had a 2 day Steering Committee meeting and retreat to establish roles for the organization and clarify personnel.  Due to funding from the Packard Foundation for the next year, IBI was able to establish a Board of Directors as well as dedicated organization personnel; clarify the organization's mission and focus; and look to expanding its programs in the coming year.
