The Zhejiang Biochar Engineering Technology Research Center (ZJBETRC) has been established by Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ZAAS) in conjunction with the China National Bamboo Research Center (CNBRC), as dispatched by Science and Technology Department of Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang Provincial Department of Finance, Zhejiang Provincial Department and Reform Commission on Aug 27, 2012. This marked a key step in the establishment of new model and new mechanism of biochar synergetic creativity that will promote wide and deep cooperation on biochar between scientific research institutions, enterprises, governments and foreign organizations.
Dr Prof. Yang Shengmao has been appointed as the head of the center. He is the director of soil and environment department in ZAAS and a Professional Member of International Biochar Initiative (IBI). His research team focuses on the process and equipment of biomass carbonization, basic chemical and physical properties of biochar, and development and application of by-products. ZAAS has established a good relationship with CNBRC, the Zhejiang University of Technology, Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Blue Moon Agricultural Technology Limited Liability Company in recent years. They worked together on the process and equipment of waste carbonization from agriculture and forestry, agricultural and environmental effects of biochar in soil, development of biochar based fertilizer, and the effect of biochar on greenhouse gas emissions from soil, as a whole of producing, learning, research and application. ZAAS has obtained many funded projects, such as Blue Moon Foundation of USA, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Key Science and Technology Program of Hangzhou, China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, International Cooperation Program of ZAAS, and so on.
This center will focus on solving the integrated utilization problem of waste biomass from agriculture and forestry. It will make great efforts to form an international learning organization to focus on the basic research of biochar, development of carbonization equipment, application, and industrialization of biochar technology. It will become a multiple research and development platform as the form of personnel training, academic exchange, technical learning and industrial demonstration, which will provide technology support for promoting the low-carbon, cycling, ecological, environmental protection and reclamation of the waste biomass and application and industrialization of biochar technology.
