The group at UniKL is lead by Robert Bachmann and has been working on physico-chemical characterization of fresh and charred biomass since 2006--first for application in wastewater treatment and subsequently for applications to soil. They participate in collaborative projects and conduct in-house research on production and use of biochar for soil quality improvement, use of biochar for soil C sequestration, use of biochar for soil remediation, and characterization of biochar. The group has six staff and students.

The group hosted its first biochar workshop in December 2009 and a second in March 2010 (http://www.micet.edu.my/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=133).

Specific research includes:

Bachmann, R.T., Rupp, F., Zainal, H., Wan Abdul Karim Ghani, W.A., Taufiq-Yap, Y.H., Hasan, M.Y., Hamzah, Z. (2009) Biochar to enhance sustainability of crop production, reduce fertilizer needs and greenhouse gas emissions.

Organised by FRIM and UMP, Semi Silver medalist of Engineers Without Borders India Green Award 2008 for BioChar for industrial wastewater treatment. Hyderabad, 15th March, 2008.
