The Australian National University (ANU) hosts the ANU Climate Change Institute and Mathematical Sciences Institute (Canberra, Australia). The current project is the CharXive Challenge which is a paradigm for conceptualizing the scientific and socioeconomic questions associated with increasing the refractory biochar pool at the expense of the atmospheric carbon pool. The group focuses on production of biochar and use of biochar for soil C sequestration. In general the CharXive Challenge deals with scientific and socioeconomic questions associated with increasing the biochar pool at the expense of the atmospheric carbon pool given that the only way into the biochar pool is through thermoconversion of biomass.
